What is moody photography, anyway?

Moody photography is emotion-based, typically less-vibrant colors but richer color palettes, not afraid of using shadow and light to evoke a more dramatic feeling, and should feel more artistic in nature. Moody photography is not bright and light and heavenly. It’s artsy, bold, and dreamy. Moody photography reminds me of Rembrandt paintings. It reminds me of films. And it is my absolute favorite style to photograph.

Does moody have to mean dark images with strong shadows in every picture? NOOOOO. (Yes, us moody photographers love playing with light and shadow and aren’t afraid of darkness), but moody doesn’t necessarily translate into “dark images”. I’ll be going over this in another post, so stay tuned for that.

Moody photographers do usually expose their images perfectly, or underexpose a bit, whereas bright and airy photographers overexpose their images a bit. How bright an image is taken will determine the final outcome and “feel”, so if you’re after something more emotional and maybe even dramatic, moody photography is for you. If you want your photos to feel light and bright and airy and exactly how things looked in real life, moody photography probably isn’t for you. If you love the dreamy things in life, find yourself watching Tim Burton movies, and consider yourself a bold or artistic person, MOODY.PHOTOGRAPHY.IS.FOR.YOU.BB.

M threw a witchy bachelorette party and knew she wanted a moody wedding, so we worked with the universe to manifest rain and fog and made some witchy magic.

We took these photos up the mountains in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had their wedding in the same area in Utah, and I feel so honored I got to document both engagements and the wedding. (Since then we’ve done senior and boudoir photos and I can’t wait for whatever comes next.)

Tips for the Perfect Enchanted Forest Wedding

Planning an enchanted forest wedding? Here are some tips to have the enchanted forest wedding of your dreams!:

VENUE + SCENERY

The venue you choose for your enchanted forest wedding is the most important aspect. I recommend looking for outdoor locations that have plenty of pine trees, which stay beautiful all year long and can give you “enchanted forest wedding” vibes no matter when your wedding is. If you opt for a foresty venue with lots of trees that does NOT have pine trees, keep in mind trees change throughout the year. Make sure you look up examples of the area in the month you’re planning on getting married. And keep in mind mid to late October to about April NON-pine trees will look dead and bare. (If you’re going full Tim Burton and love that look, awesome.. but most people like to avoid those months.) Pine trees are a great way to get moody scenery and that enchanted forest feel.

For M + L’s intimate mountain wedding, it ended up SNOWING the day before, which was unexpected, but they still had the enchanted forest wedding of their dreams. I feel so fortunate that I got to be their wedding photographer. I helped M find the location for the ceremony and photos, and helped put together a timeline for the best lighting. I’m so happy with the moody vibes and even happier that M + L got the wedding they wanted. The location was perfect for them. They got an Airbnb 5 minutes from the ceremony location where everyone got ready, did the ceremony in the mountains, that we obtained a permit for, we took photos in one of my favorite areas nearby, and then the reception was 10-15 minutes away at London Studios in Salt Lake City, Utah.

TIME OF YEAR

Time of year is also important if you want an enchanted forest wedding. The best months for an enchanted forest wedding are between July and mid-October. (Don’t push it past October 10th or you’ll risk everything being dead.) Personally, September and early October are my absolute favorite times for ANY wedding, but especially an enchanted forest wedding. The lighting is gorgeous, the scenery is epic, and it’s the best time for the best wedding photos.

Keep in mind, where you live might have different seasons, and I can help you decide the best time for your wedding depending on where it will be. Most areas are still the best between July and early October.

COLORS

The best colors for an enchanted forest wedding are shades that give a pop of “drama”— think deep tones with metallic accents or deep tones with neutral accents or vice versa. Here are the best color palette ideas for an enchanted forest wedding:

For a moody fall enchanted forest wedding, think eucalyptus green, wine red, and complimentary colors.

You might notice a trend with colors that work well in an enchanted forest wedding: earthy greens and browns along with a pop of moody tones, such as burgundy, plum, or copper. If your wedding will be in a forest, the deep greens and browns will already be a part of nature, so choose hues that are complimentary to those shades. Once you have your earthy tones, choose a bold shade that you love, and keep the rest of your colors in a similar family. For example, if you choose plum for your main color, consider adding in accents like mauve, grey, black, silver (or gold), and a few shades lighter or darker than your main plum color, will help your enchanted forest wedding colors pop.

  2. Obtain Necessary Permits: If your chosen elopement location requires permits for ceremonies, photography, or parking, make sure to obtain them in advance. Contact the appropriate authorities or park services for information on permits and regulations. Not all permit information can be found online with a google search. However, if you are planning to elope at a State Park or National Park, you can usually find all the permit information on the park’s website, along with any necessary information for planning your elopement at a specific park.

  3. Hire a Local Officiant: To make your elopement official, you'll need to have a licensed officiant to perform the ceremony. Consider hiring a local officiant who is familiar with elopements in the area and can help personalize the ceremony to suit your preferences.   6. Consider Witnesses: Utah requires two witnesses for a marriage ceremony to be legally binding. You can either invite close friends or family members to act as witnesses or inquire if your officiant can provide witnesses for you. If I am your photographer and/or videographer, I can officiate your wedding and act as a witness.

  7. Check the Weather: Utah's weather can be unpredictable, especially in certain seasons. Check the weather forecast for your elopement date and prepare accordingly with appropriate attire and accessories. Bear in mind, Utah’s forecast is not the most reliable and should be used as a guide, although I suggest to be prepared for any type of weather.

  8. Pack Essentials: Bring essentials for your elopement, such as your marriage license, identification documents, rings, and any personalized items you want to incorporate into the ceremony.
